Outreach Project For 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month'

This October, breast cancer awareness month,  a group of TY students have volunteered to be involved in an outreach project headed by local woman Elaine Doolan. The aim of the project is to provide some comfort for those receiving chemotherapy. Elaine is looking for sponsorship for "Chemo Care Pouches", in order to buy and fill little pouches for those receiving treatment. The pouches will be filled with little things to help brighten up patients days, e.g. cosy fluffy socks, moisturizer, eyebrow pencil etc..

The 4A group together with their Religion teacher Ms R. O’Brien and Elaine are going to gather, pack and present these pouches to patients in the CUH at the end of the month. It is such a worthy cause and such a simple gesture. If any one wishes to get involved please let us know.

Boys Basketball

Both the boys U16 and U19 League Competitions kicked off this week with home matches against Schull Community College

The U16 boys were first up on Wednesday morning at 10:15 am.  While the team may have been a little bit rusty this early in the season, they dominated the game from the start. This gave Ms. O'Mahony the opportunity to run her entire bench, and shake off the cobwebs before Thursday's National Cup match against Waterpark College in Waterford. The Skibbereen Community School boys ran out easy winners in the end, 68-15.

Next up was the under 19 team. While they faced a stiffer test, again all 14 players got to play and make their mark on the game.  Skibbereen Community School had the match put to to bed by half time, with some very good team and individual scoring performances. This was a first schools' match for some of the players so well done to all.  MVP for the match was Michael O'Sullivan 6th yr.

The next Challenge for both of these teams is a home game against the very physical Castletownbere on Tuesday October 16th, followed by what will undoubtably  be their toughest test, away against Rosscarbery on October 18th.

Congratulations to the U16 Boys Basketball Team who beat Waterpark College, Waterford today  in the first round of the National Schools Cup.

"A Taste of West Cork Food Festival" Conference, Friday Sept 14th

A-Taste-of-West-Cork-logo-new-1.jpg

On the 14th of September 2018, we had the amazing opportunity to learn about our local producers and the stories behind them. Mr Donal O’Driscoll from Skibbereen and Bandon credit union started us off with an insightful speech about what it takes to run a business.

Next up to the mic was Ms Fiona Field who is the manager for the Taste of West Cork. She told us about the ins and outs of how it came about. There are 41 towns and 6 islands involved in the 2018 Taste of West Cork.

The first cooking demonstration was done by winner of MasterChef USA 2016 Mr Shawn O Neale. He showed us the correct way to cut an onion, using a certain technique called the ‘claw method’.

Ms Siobhán O Callaghan, owner of Kalbos and Uilinn of Skibbereen was up next. She gave us an insight into her early cookery career and her successful business. She cooked up a lovely pasta dish, which we learned very affordable to produce.

Mr Noel Murphy, head of hospitality and tourism studies in CIT, explained to us what outstanding opportunities their courses give to their students throughout their time in college and for years after.

Then we got up and moving with Mr Jonathan Davis, who was a past pupil of St Fachtnas De La Salle. He has set up his own successful business called Bodyactive. He offers fitness classes locally here in Skibbereen.

Following the workout was local entrepreneur Mr Alan Kingston who set up Glenilen farm in Drimoleague. He gave us a very amusing presentation about the backstory of his company, and the ups and downs through the years.

Clara Hickey from Skeaghnore Duck, a qualified chef from CIT, showed us how to make an easily affordable dish using her families duck and local produce

The final food entrepreneur was Ms Avril Allshire Howe from Caherbeg and Rosscarbery recipes. She informed us about the evolution of their brand

To finish it all off was Ms Clare Gallagher who gave the closing address, to thank all those involved

Overall it was a very enjoyable successful day.
