A number of first years were welcomed into the panel. Many thanks to both coaches, Mr. Patrick McCarthy and Mr. James McCarthy for all their work.

Spanish Exchange, Sept 7th-13th 2018

We say goodbye to our Spanish friends from Madrid who depart tomorrow. 20 Students and their teachers Anna and Pilar experienced West Cork hospitality, culture and coastline (and weather for a week). They stayed with our Third years and their families. They went Kayaking with Mr. Keating on Lough Hyne, Hiking in Owenahincha with Mr. Murphy and surfing in Inchydoney with Mr. Hayes. They were a fantastic bunch to work with, extremely eager and cheerful. We wish them a safe trip home. We thank Ms. Sheane for organising the week and the aforementioned teachers and host families for all their help.

Changing Minds Conference

The Conference for the second transnational week here in Ireland started in Skibbereen Community School on Friday the 31st August at 12:30 pm with an introduction from Alicia O’Sullivan and Áine Seymour, followed by a video produced by StoriCreative about the purpose of ‘Changing Minds’.

It was then passed on to Susan O'Regan (Youth Facilitator) for the Skibbereen girls. She spoke about the passion that has been shown towards the project and all the hard work being put in by young and old participants of the project.

Marie Cregan, founder of The Aurelia Trust, gave a brief insight into how the charity began and thanked everyone for the work gone into the project.

Muirios Waugh and Eric Wickens then played an original song which the Romanians found very intriguing.

Then it was handed over to the youth participants. First up was the Galati group who spoke about the Ceaușescu Regime and the effects of it. Next to take the mic were the boys from Castlebar who spoke about the charities in Ireland who work for people with disabilities and a short reflection of their time involved in the project.

Then it was the Negru Voda group who showed a video of three people who lived through the Ceaușescu Regime.

Finally the Skibbereen girls were up to give the statistics from a survey they did back in November with a number of students from the school about how much they know about The Aurelia Trust, Changing Minds and Erasmus Plus, and they also gave reflections of the week.

There was an interlude for beautiful music from Róisín Harte Leonard. Aine Seymour gave a few words on the success of the entire project from fundraisers to spreading awareness to the experiences we’ve all had and to the friends we’ve made.

Alicia O’Sullivan then addressed the room about disabilities and simple interaction strategies everyone can use. Minister Jim Daly addressed the room in Irish and spoke highly of the project and the work being done by young people. It was concluded by Principal Anton O'Mahony who welcomed the Romanians and said he was very proud of his students and all involved. Susan O’Regan had the last word by thanking all involved and for being there and invited everyone down to the Learning Resource Center for light refreshments, music and a tour.

The conference ended with traditional Irish music from Davina and Saoirse Connolly and Molly McQueen.

2nd Year CSPE Action Project

CSPE Action Project

 The UN Peacekeeping Mission

By Jack Marks

For our CSPE project we invited a guest speaker into our class to talk to us about the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the Mediterranean. Our guest speaker was Diarmuid O'Donovan Lieutenant Commander on board of the L.É. Samuel Beckett P61 offshore Patrol Vessel of the Irish defence force.

Diarmuid came into my class to talk to us about the Peacekeeping Mission in the Mediterranean Sea. The Mission involves patrolling the Mediterranean Sea looking for scared migrants fleeing their countries for better opportunities in life due to war or poverty in their own countries.

When they find some migrants they rescue them as the boats they are traveling in are very dangerous as they are tiny for a start, have a really bad engine or have no engine and most people don’t get a life jacket on them and no one knows where they are going or how to swim. So when the crew on the boat find them they rescue them off their dangerous little boat and bring them to safety in Spain or Italy. But rescuing the migrants has its own problems as there is a gang with big boats and guns who try to shoot the boats the migrants are on so the boats will sink. Getting the migrants off the boats is dangerous as most of the time the boats are unstable due to the amount of migrants on them. If the crew makes a wrong move or if the people on the boats all move at once it could spell disaster as the boat could capsize and drown everyone or it could tip the naval ship over.

When we were planning to invite Diarmuid in we had different committees to invite him in as the permission committee had to write two letters: one to Mr O'Mahony and one to Mr O'Donnabháin to get permission to let us bring Diarmuid in to talk to us. Once we got permission we had a venue committee who got us a room so Diarmuid could talk to us. But before Diarmuid could come in we had a questioning committee who came up with a list of question to give to Diarmuid to answer for us. When Diarmuid came in we had a welcoming committee to welcome him to our school. There was a refreshment committee to get him a drink or anything he required. When he was leaving, there was a 'Thank You' committee who thanked him for coming and gave him a reusable coffee cup from our school as a token of thanks.

The last committee which I was a part of was the Social Media group. My task along with Wayne and Daniel was to write up about Diarmuid's visit and why he came in and about what he said. The main skills I used while typing up a report on his visit was:

§  Listening to what he said as he was very interesting.

§  Reviewing everything he said and that had happened.

§  Using a computer to type up the report.

§  Agreeing with the other members in my group about the review and any issues we had while typing it up.

I feel my class was very lucky to have Diarmuid come and talk to us as he was very interesting and gave us a greater understanding of what he does to help the migrants.

Spanish Cooking Day

Mr. Vicente Rodrigo's 3rd year Spanish class had a Spanish Cooking Day last Friday, May 18th. Ms Sheane and her 6th years were also in attendance, to see how students cooked their Spanish omelettes. It was a very successful and enjoyable day.

JCSP Graduation

On Monday 21st May, The Junior Certificate School Programme (JCSP) graduation was held for 34 of our students. In recognition of these students continuous hard work over the last three years, each student was awarded a certificate. Lunch from the school canteen was also served as part of the celebration. It was a great afternoon and we wish these students the very best of luck in their upcoming Junior Certificate examinations. Many thanks to the JCSP Co-ordinators, Ms. Hannah Phelan & Mr. Patrick Hayes.
